What Is Pea Gravel? Sizes, Uses, Cost and How Much You Need
Pea gravel is small, smooth, rounded stone, usually about 3/8 inch. Learn pea gravel sizes, the best uses (patios, walkways, drainage), cost per yard and how much to order.

Pea gravel is small, smooth, naturally rounded stone, roughly the size of a pea. It is one of the most popular landscaping stones because it is:
- comfortable underfoot,
- drains freely, and
- comes in soft natural colors such as tan, white, gray and brown.
This guide covers pea gravel sizes, where it works best (and where it doesn’t), what it costs, and how to work out exactly how much you need. To size a project straight away, use the pea gravel calculator.
What size is pea gravel?
According to Angi, pea gravel comes in three standard sizes, and most pea gravel sold is about 3/8 inch (Angi):
| Size | Best for |
|---|---|
| 3/8 inch (most common) | Patios, dog runs, fire pits, playgrounds, pathways |
| 1/4 inch | Decorative use: flower beds, around trees, xeriscaping |
| 1/8 inch | Top layer or mixed with other sizes, play areas |
Angi notes that 1/8-inch pea gravel is too small for a solid walkway or driveway base on its own.
What is pea gravel used for?
Pea gravel patios
A pea gravel patio is one of the cheapest patios you can build. It drains instantly after rain, and furniture sits on it without leaving permanent marks. Use edging to keep the stone in place, and lay it over a compacted base so chairs don’t sink. Our gravel patio guide walks through the build.
Walkways and garden paths
Pea gravel is comfortable to walk on and easy to rake level. Edging matters even more here, because foot traffic pushes the round stones sideways.
Landscaping and flower beds
Pea gravel works as a mulch alternative around plants, in rock gardens and in xeriscapes. Unlike wood mulch, it doesn’t rot or blow away.
Drainage
Rounded stones leave open gaps, so water passes through quickly. Pea gravel is often used around downspouts, in dry wells and as a top dressing. For French drains, washed 3/4-inch angular stone is usually preferred, because it doesn’t pack into the pipe’s perforations. See the best gravel for a French drain.
Is pea gravel good for a driveway?
Not as the main driving surface. Angi lists pea gravel’s downsides as: it shifts over time, can’t be tamped, and lets weeds through (Angi). Round stones roll under tires, so ruts and bare patches form fast.
For driveways, angular crushed stone over a compacted crusher-run base performs much better. See the best gravel for a driveway.
Pea gravel pros and cons
Pros
- Inexpensive compared with most decorative stone
- Smooth and comfortable underfoot
- Drains very well
- Easy to spread, rake and top up
- Wide range of natural colors
Cons
- Shifts and migrates without edging
- Can’t be compacted into a firm surface
- Weeds can grow through it without a fabric underlayer
- Hard to shovel snow off and to clean leaves from
How much does pea gravel cost?
| Unit | Price | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Per cubic yard (standard) | $25 – $55 | Angi |
| Per cubic yard (colored) | $45 – $80 | Angi |
| Per ton | $28 – $45 | HomeGuide |
| Per bag | $2 – $6 | HomeGuide |
HomeGuide notes that large orders of 24+ tons get close to $28 per ton, while small orders pay about $45 (HomeGuide). For a full price breakdown, see our gravel cost guide.
How much pea gravel do I need?
Use the standard volume formula:
Cubic yards = length (ft) × width (ft) × depth (in) ÷ 12 ÷ 27
Then convert to tons by multiplying by about 1.4. Dry gravel weighs about 105 lb per cubic foot, or roughly 2,835 lb (1.4 tons) per cubic yard (Engineering ToolBox).
Example: a 12 × 12 ft pea gravel patio, 3 inches deep
- Area: 12 × 12 = 144 sq ft
- Volume: 144 × (3 ÷ 12) = 36 cubic feet
- Cubic yards: 36 ÷ 27 = 1.33 yd³
- Tons: 1.33 × 1.4 = 1.87 tons
- Bags (0.5 ft³): 36 ÷ 0.5 = 72 bags
How far does one cubic yard of pea gravel go?
| Depth | Coverage per cubic yard |
|---|---|
| 2 in | 162 sq ft |
| 3 in | 108 sq ft |
| 4 in | 81 sq ft |

How to lay pea gravel
- Mark the area with paint or string, and dig out 3–4 inches of soil.
- Install edging (steel, stone, brick or timber) so the stone stays in place.
- Compact the soil. For patios, add a compacted crushed-stone base for a firmer surface.
- Lay landscape fabric to stop weeds and keep the stone from mixing into the soil.
- Spread the pea gravel 2–3 inches deep and rake it level.
- Top up yearly as the stone settles and migrates.
Bagged vs bulk pea gravel
Bags are handy for small jobs, but bulk is far cheaper once you need more than about half a cubic yard. One cubic yard is 54 bags of 0.5 ft³. See how many bags of gravel you need for a full bag chart.
Frequently asked questions
What is pea gravel? Small, smooth, rounded stone, usually 1/8 to 3/8 inch, shaped naturally by water.
What size is standard pea gravel? Most pea gravel is about 3/8 inch (Angi).
How much does a yard of pea gravel cover? About 108 sq ft at 3 inches deep, or 81 sq ft at 4 inches.
Does pea gravel need landscape fabric? It is strongly recommended. Fabric blocks weeds and stops the stone sinking into the soil.
